Chen Li (Sichuan University) Wu Jianzhong (University of Macau Library) Cheng Huanwen (School of Information Management, Sun Yat-sen University)Zhou Deming (Shanghai Library) Ni Xiaojian (Culture Development Center, Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the People’s Republic of China) Na Yan (Shaoxing Library)
Libraly Journal. 2023, 42 (388): 4-13.
Chen Li briefly reviewed the historical background of the publication of Library Service Manifesto. He pointed out that several incidents concerning library service at the beginning of the 21st century call the public attention to the welfare nature of public libraries, and triggered discussions among librarians and library academics. The pilot reform on the cultural system and new policy of “free library, free museum and free gallery” jointly promoted the formulation of Library Service Manifesto. Wu Jianzhong pointed out that domestic library has reached a new level in terms of standardized services and professional improvement in the past 15 years under the guidance of Library Service Manifesto. The revision is an inevitable step towards service of higher quality in the new era, and serves as an important symbol of the maturity of the industry, as well as an open commitment to the joint development of libraries and society. Cheng Huanwen explained the symbolic significance of Library Service Manifesto as reflected in three aspects. First, it symbolized the self-regulation of the industry. Second, it stood for the understanding of the fundamental values of library industry. Third, it bespoke the return to rationality when libraries should think about how to integrate the values of equality and freedom into theoretical research and practices. Zhou Deming, while endorsing the role of Library Service Manifesto in promoting the development of library, reminded us that a higher level of professionalism would be emphasized in the future, calling for the exemplary role of chief librarians, advanced development of librarian team, novelty of technology and the continuity of innovation. Ni Xiaojian believed that Library Service Manifesto, although promulgated 15 years ago, still stood true in terms of its historical significance, guiding the nation towards service concept, people orientation, cultural rights, non-discriminatory service, open and cooperative mentality, and library spirit. We should, in accordance with the requirement of library development and characteristics of libraries of each level, further improve the content of the Library Service Manifesto, and keep the emphasis on the people-oriented service concept that endorses integrity and innovation. Na Yan suggested tapping further into the cultural connotation of Library Service Manifesto, and improving its content while ensuring that we stick to our unique path, answer the call of the times, enable the continuance of services, and remain to be open, inclusive, reciprocal and ready for exchanges.

The Development Characteristics of Modern Private Book Collection in Jiangsu and Its Social Direction
Yang Lujia (School of Information Management, Nanjing University)
Libraly Journal. 2023, 42 (388): 34-45.
Since modern times, the social landscape has changed dramatically. This paper discusses the development characteristics of Jiangsu private collections of books in modern times and its social direction from the perspective of historical context by focusing on the modern Jiangsu bibliophile group. From the spatial dimension, the bibliophile groups in modern Jiangsu are mainly located in the south of the Yangtze River, especially in Suzhou. From the perspective of time sequence, the private collections of books went through the phases from prosperity to decline after the short-term prosperity in the early and middle period of modern times. The thoughts and characteristics of Jiangsu bibliophile group reflect the modern characteristics of “public use of private collection”, “equal emphasis on both collection and use” and “industrial and commercial industrialists have become a group of emerging bibliophile”. Based on the textual research and sorting out the main flow direction of private collections in Jiangsu, the visual Sankey diagrams are used to dynamically reveal the social flow direction of private collections of books in Jiangsu through the ways of “sale”, “donation” and “loss”. It shows that in the evolution of private and public collections in modern times, private collections have developed from the regional characteristics of long-term accumulation in Jiangsu, to the flow of their collections throughout the north and south of the country, and even spread abroad. The history of dispersing private collection into public collection, which gradually developed from a high degree of concentration to openness, can provide a reference for exploring the development of modern Chinese society and culture.

Concentration, Continuation and Extension: Research Pattern of Nobel Laureates Based on the Topic: An Empirical Analysis of Physics
Ding Jingda, Chen Yifan (School of Cultural Heritage and Information Management, Shanghai University)
Libraly Journal. 2023, 42 (388): 100-109.
Nobel laureates are representative of outstanding scientists, and their research mode, once revealed, can be helpful to promote the development of science. In the study, we take the Nobel laureates in physics from 1902 to 2016 as an example. A combination of BERT semantic model and AP (Affinity Propagation) clustering is used to detect the research topics of each laureate’s papers. Then the research characteristics of laureates are analyzed from two perspectives: concentration and diffusion. The empirical analysis of the Nobel laureates in physics shows that they share a similar pattern of research behavior, which is “concentration, continuation and extension”. Although laureates will conduct multiple research topics in different periods throughout their careers, they remain focused on the Prize-winning topics while being active in their research. And with the growth of age, they would gradually expand research into other topics beyond the Prize-winning topics.
