Research on Pierce Butler’s Library Science Theory
Zhang Ge
Libraly Journal. 2020, 39 (5): 13-20.
Based on Butler’s An Introduction to Library Science, Scholarship and Civilization, and several
other works, we strive to piece up his library science theory from three aspects: academic framework,
research on essential attributes, and interdisciplinary methodology. In the end, through the comparison with
Waples, we discuss the conflicts of their thoughts within Chicago School. Finally, we summarize Butler’s
three contributions to the library science theory: proposing the universally applicable academic framework
“science-technology-humanity”; accurately revealing the nature of books, libraries and library science as
well as roadmap to understand them; openly advocating the introduction of research methods of other
disciplines to the studies of library science.

Information-Resource Emergency Support System of Academic Libraries
Cai Yingchun, Wu Zhirong
Libraly Journal. 2020, 39 (5): 43-54.
Library Regulations for General Colleges has no specific provisions on emergency services
university libraries should offer. Neither is there any corresponding researches in China and abroad on
how to guarantee information resources in the time of serious epidemic outbreak. It is urgent for university
libraries to think about and study the crisis management during the novel coronavirus epidemic in 2019
and 2020, so as to establish an effective emergency information resources guarantee system in university
libraries and to cope with more ever-changing information service environment in the future. Through
literature review and website research, and based on the service report of university libraries in all provinces
and cities in China during the epidemic period, as published on the website of the University Library
Information Work Steering Committee of the Ministry of Education, this paper explores the main content,
points out the existing problems of emergency information resources guarantee system in five aspects,
namely, emergency management, resource service, network technology service platform security and
librarian expertise. Considering the current situation and in view of exemplary cases of resource services
during the epidemic, it also puts forth five proposals to address the aforementioned issues respectively.

Practices and Thoughts on University Libraries’ Service for Minors: A Case Study of Xiamen University Libraries
.Shao Jianbin, Huang Guofan
Libraly Journal. 2020, 39 (5): 75-80.
Minors service is one of the important library services, whereas public culture service system
oriented towards minors is one of the important parts of building a strong socialist culture in China.
Currently, public libraries (including children’s libraries), primary and middle school libraries are the
major forces which provide minors services, while university libraries have a fairly weak voice. Minors
services provided by university libraries have abundant foundations in terms legal principles. In practice,
however, university libraries need to improve minors’ digital literacy, develop reading promotion activity
with university characteristics, handle relationships between services to minors and teaching & research
services, give full play to the resource advantage, and pay attention to marketing.

Latent Relations in Ego-centric Correspondence Network
Li Hui, Hou Junming, Chen Tao, Zhu Qinghua, Liu Wei
Libraly Journal. 2020, 39 (5): 86-92.
Historic correspondence, in the form of letters, contains significant information of historic
figures such as their notes on the society, fluctuations in career, and life experiences. These letters can
help us expand knowledge beyond recorded historic events, supplement the details of historic literature,
and understand the complexity and versatility of these historic figures more comprehensively. However,
due to the limited scale of and access to historic correspondence, most correspondence research is stuck
on the level of individual letters. Different from previous researches, we, on the basis of our historical
correspondence network model, introduce two indicators, namely, topic relevance and topic similarity, to
explore the interpersonal/community relationships embedded in the individual ego-centric correspondence
network. We conduct experiments on the dataset of an individual letter collection, and correlate the
corresponding experimental results with certain historic events. This can be a valuable reference and guide
for researchers doing similar projects in future.
