Theoretical Issues Regarding Readers as Library Resource
Wang Zizhou
Libraly Journal. 2017, 36 (5): 4-8.
The concept of “readers as a library resource” and its development is taking shape in the 21st century. It has connections with and distinction from library resource, user resource, social resource, social capital and so forth. The research field involves its effects, categories, features, distribution, development, utilization and measurement, whereas its connotation includes knowledge resource, human resource, relationship resource and asset resource, with the characteristics of being tacit, dynamic, unstable, scarce and self-organized. Perceiving readers as library resource will be significant for the innovation of library science and librarianship. While methods differ, the successful cases are all well received in the library circle, where competitiveness of the libraries concerned is well enhanced.

Practices of Building Authority Files for Journals
Wang Junhui, Yu Changliang,Fang An,Ren Huiling,GeHongmei, Liang Fang
Libraly Journal. 2017, 36 (5): 41-46.
Building authority files for journals are conducive to the management and authority control of the journal bibliographic information. Based on the analysis of application scenarios of journal authority file in NSTL digital business platform, this paper summarizes its two core requirements: resource descriptions & retrievals, and data statistics & analysis. The paper addresses the issue of missing history information in NSTL Union Catalog System, and takes Ulrich journal as external supplement to complete the journal historical relations. As for the integration of journal titles in different external resources, it uses PubMed journal as an example to illustrate the point. Finally, sample data is validated by means of the prototype system.

The Ratio Model of h-index and e-index in Publication Citation Distribution with Theoretical Analysis
Eric P. Qi, Fred Y. Ye
Libraly Journal. 2017, 36 (5): 62-71.
Two models, namely, the shifted power function (SPF) and the decreasing exponential function (DEF), are introduced to estimate the ratio of e-index and h-index (e/h) in publication-citation distribution. With data from perspectives of discipline, journal, country and institution, it is revealed that SPF overestimates e/h while DEF underestimates e/h. Deeper analysis finds that the high randomness of sample points in h-core is the main factor affecting models’ accuracy. Considering h-core’s small proportion in the entire publication-citation distribution, and the good property of SPF and DEF for the oretical analysis, it concludes that ratio models of e-index and h-index can be used as general theoretical references.

Thematic Analysis of Change in Use of American Public Libraries’Service
Hu Jiming, Yang Ningwei
Libraly Journal. 2017, 36 (5): 98-104.
Public libraries play an important role in the life and work of Americans, yet the latter’s use of libraries has taken a more noticeable change in recent years. The paper, quoting the reasons stated by surveyed patrons for their change in library use, extracts the themes by way of Nvivo and SPSS Text Analytics. It then builds the semantic map between these themes by Pajek and VOSviewer, and visualize the result. Education of kids and teens, traditional resources and services, and the convenient access are the major reasons for the increase of library use; whereas the Internet technology, lifestyle change, and the growing need of electronic resources and services lead to the decrease of library use. In the meanwhile, information technology has influenced the library use in both ways: the free internet access and skills training encourage people to use library, but library also loses readers of high income and/or high education to the more convenient technologies. That said, however, public libraries do innovate their services according to the technical surge in an attempt to retain patrons. The paper also notices the class issue as betrayed by the different changes in library use, and plans a further analysis that studies the correlation between class, demographics and behavioral change in library use.
