This paper presents and explains the theory of ‘literature discovery’, and makes discussion on its
methodology. Further, it expounds the significance of ‘literature discovery’ theory, which is the new social role
and core competitiveness of contemporary library. The proposal of this theory will promote the collectionbuilding
theory and the further development of theoretical research on library functions. This paper also gives
an example of ‘literature discovery’ regarding the philosophy and social science literature.

The applications of online mapping enhance the visualization, but the graphics are often too complicated to
be interpreted. In the meanwhile, because of the lack of academic knowledge, bibliometric scholars are restrained from
in-depth analysis. Therefore, the combination of bibliometrics, online mapping (simplified), and expert knowledge has
become an inevitable choice. The paper, by studying the changes of scientific output in deepwater oil and gas fields (a
hot topic in environmental resources in recent years) divides the key principle into 2 major subject areas, identifies the
five key research themes, and notices that nations that resemble US disciplines distribution are also great powers in the
field. These results reflect the field’s developmental trend, and have also been acknowledged by experts in the field.

This study applies visualization methods to analyse intellectual structure of library and information science
from 1993 to 2012. By drawing knowledge maps to visualize main research focuses in the area, as well as changes in
research priorities between the first ten years (1993-2002) and the second ten years (2003~2012). In addition, it also
analyses seven research frontiers in the library and information science dataset by detecting frequency rates of noun
phrase extracted from the titles and abstracts of papers.

The values and views of future libraries will be transformed from “mechanical” to “animate”,
from “spontaneous” to “conscious”, from “contingent” to “inevitable”, from “general” to “specific”, and
from “unique” to “widely shared”. In terms of value orientation, the emphasis will change from “to satisfy
personalized deamnds” to “to promote general knowledge freedom”, from “agent of objective information
resources” to “collaborator of nurturing capability of knowledge utilization”, from “to safeguard intellectual
property rights” to “to oversee the efficient allocation of public information resources”, and from “responding
to the current needs” to “guiding future demands”.

Library, having characteristics of public space and opening service, is a good platform for public
diplomacy. With the increasing and development of global cultural exchanges, public diplomacy is being tried
by more and more libraries. This article mainly introduces what the Shanghai Library has done, is doing and
will do in public diplomacy.

The effort of microblogging marketing has just started, and only a very few public libraries are
really good at it. The most microblogging marketing is too simple and homogenous to arouse readers’ interest
in participation. Public library should pay more attention to communication, schedule planning, management
and creativity of its reading promotion strategy based on microblogging marketing.

For a comprehensive understanding of the satisfaction rate of Southern Medical Library electronic
resources, we count and analyze satisfaction rate of the references of SCI papers, which was published by the school
in 2011, and propose some recommendations for the construction of university library resources and service based on
the statistical results.

Contract for selective dissemination of information service is a type of technical service
contract in nature, possesses the characteristics of being unique subjects, public welfare, non-profit,
continuous and standardized. It thus abides by the principles of appropriate performance, cooperation,
secrecy, and respect for intellectual property rights.

The paper studies the evaluation of library services of various classification, and then analyses
the characteristics of public libraries assessment and rating. The authors provide some suggestions on
improvement of the public library services evaluation in the end.

Through the meta-analysis of reader satisfaction survey data, the paper questions the view
that equates “basically satisfied” with “satisfied” and regards the generalization as a confusing method to
acquire readers’ feedbacks. It thus recommends revisionary efforts to ask supplementary open questions to
find out what exactly leads to readers’ “dissatisfaction”, so as to increase the accuracy of information.

From the perspectives of the host-guest, the paper discusses the reasons why the bibliographic
recommendation service of university libraries doesn’t live up to expectations. Under the guidance of content
marketing theory, the author puts forward the concept of “book-single curation”, integrates it organically
with bibliographic recommendation service, and discusses its value. By presenting the three effective ways
of implementing “Book-single curation” on the part of university libraries, the author also argues about the
key points for implementation and summarizes from the perspective of reader development.

According to the analysis of the current situation and problems of the cultivation of innovative
talents of academic university, this paper introduces the comprehensive practices of the “Innovation
Community” program in Shanghai Jiao Tong University Library. The program has developed many kinds
of activities including innovation salon, innovation club, innovation competition and exhibition, studying
and sharing center, innovation support service and thorough service, which effectively extend the content
of the Shanghai Jiao Tong University Library IC² innovation service.

The paper analyses the significance and importance of library and information science research,
the problems of library and information studies, the role of knowledge and skills of university librarians,
advantages of college librarians to conduct professional reading and academic research. It concludes
that professional reading and academic research is the inevitable requirement for library to increase core
competitiveness, and is the engine driving university library’s service capacity. The author hopes to draw
libraries and librarians’ attention to professional reading and academic research, so as to help enhance the
service capacity of libraries.

Sci2 is developed by Katy Börner and her team in Indiana University. The aim of this paper
is to introduce new mapping knowledge analysis software, Sci2, for other researchers in our country. This
paper explains how Sci builds the mapping knowledge2 and its advantages2 in visualization. The paper
first introduces background information and configuration requirements of Sci2, and then highlights the
functions of the seven menu bars and the three windows in building the mapping knowledge. After pointing
out the advantages of Sci2 in visualization and taking the co-author network as an example, it also illustrates
some deficiencies for it.

There are varieties of attempts in the embedded services for undergraduates in the USA. The
service of the embedded librarian for online students is especially emphasized. Taking University of Central
Florida, Capella University and Baylor University as examples, this paper introduces three different modes
of embedded librarian service, including the aided teaching mode based on online courses, the mode of
librarian on temporary transfer based on online courses and the guidance mode based on social networking
sites. Contributing factors to success are analyzed such as early investigation of user needs, support and
encouragement from the management, vigorous publicity, establishment of mutual trust between librarians
and readers, communication and feedback. The findings could be referred by domestic academic libraries
which are going to launch this kind of services.

Yang Weili has several foreign languages at his fingertips. He studied medicine in Japan in his
early years, and later in 1946 he entered Beijing University as a Taiwanese student on public scholarship.
During this period he renounced the pen for the sword, influenced by progressive ideas. Followed his father’s
instructions he aspired to be a great statesman and diplomat in childhood. Nevertheless, he established
Asia’s largest library with a collection of nearly one million in socialist history documents and became the
dean of the library of the CPC Central Compilation and Translation Bureau. He made great progress in the
bibilography of Marxism-Leninism classical works and the history of Western library.

Liang Qichao is a Chinese scholar, journalist, philosopher, and reformist during the late Qing
dynasty and early Chinese Republic who inspired Chinese scholars with his writings and reform movements.
In all his life Liang Qichao was closely connected with the Chinese library development because he is one
of the most important pioneers in this field and made great contributions to it. His theory of library still
exerts considerable influence in the advancement of contemporary library career.
