The Study of Children’s Reading Guidance in the Period of the Republic of China: Concepts and Methods

Abstract: The study of the children’s reading guidance in the period of the Republic of Chinacan not only form a systematic and comprehensive understanding of the children’s reading guidance back at time, but also help navigate current children’s reading promotion work. Through the analysis of historical literature, this paper notices that people mainly guided children in reading from reading interest, reading methods, and reading environment. It summarizes the characteristics of the reading guidance: focusing on cultivating children’s comprehensive abilities, advocating extensive guidance subjects, and paying attention to the effect of the reading guidance. Considering the current state of China, it provides effective suggestions for children’s reading promotion, including emphasis on the principle of graded reading guidance, implementation of the equal reading opportunity, and improvement in the ability of adults’ reading guidance.
