Picture Book Reading and Reader Service for Children in Public Libraries: Focusing on Wu Cuihong and Her Team’s Picture Book Reading Promotion Practices

Abstract: Picture book reading promotion is currently one of the main reader services for children developed by libraries and related institutions. Using interviews and literature research, the article retrospectively sorts out Wu Cuihong and her team’s more than ten years of pioneering picture book reading promotion practices, and finds that Guangzhou Library and Guangzhou Children’s Library have stood out in the field of picture book reading promotion as a result of their efforts. They have also provided valuable practical experience for other libraries in multiple dimensions such as space construction, activity forms, personnel training, and venue construction. Wu Cuihong’s team adheres to the concept of “unity of knowing and doing”, converting years of research and practical results into three monographs which equally emphasize theory and practice. They are useful practical guide for picture book reading. From the four aspects of action guidelines, service concepts, working methods, and strategic planning, the article showed the important experience of Wu Cuihong and her team in the practice of pragmatic and refined picture book reading promotion.
