Abstract: Scholastic, the world’s largest publisher of children’s books, published the KIDS & FAMILY
READING REPORT in collaboration with YouGov, an international professional consulting firm. This article
is based on reports regarding the United Kingdom, India, Australia, Canada, the United States from year
2015 to 2017, which analyzed the reading status of children and family there in four aspects: reading attitude,
behavior, preference, and how to encourage reading. The article also summarizes the characteristics of reading
aloud, reading in school and summer reading. The lessons drawn for libraries in China are that libraries should
improve children’s and parents’ reading awareness, provide guidelines of reading at birth, develop, and respect
children’s interest in reading. Libraries should also introduce and enrich “summer reading” to the children and
family. The report reminds libraries of making good use of digital reading products as well.
