Abstract: Professor Tian’s Tao Yuanming and Manuscript Culture: The Record of a Dusty Table has aroused strong repercussions at home and abroad. Unlike the unanimous praise given by overseas sinology circles, the responses of mainland scholars showed a trend of polarization, with more criticism than praise. This article is not intended to discuss the quality by analyzing the details, but to focus on various academic stances from the different evaluations of Chinese and Western scholars and their reception and application of traditional academic theories. We would understand our attitude towards traditional and overseas new ideas, by listing out all regarding issues. As we reflect on the cultural and academic differences between China and the West, we should take a stand for our country’s ancient classic and ancient society’s cultural development, and discard the dross and take its essence to deepen and expand our self-reflection regarding the research of classical literature.
