Research on Huang Jingwan’s Library Thought and Practice

Abstract:

Drawing upon historical materials this article presents an overview of Huang Jingwan’s lifeand summarizes his contribution to library practice. Huang founded several mobile libraries civilianlibraries and children‘s libraries to promote public welfare initiated and served in the Shanghai LibraryAssociation and compiled bibliographies and library surveys. This article identifies the core of Huang‘s library ideology as the development of a hierarchical public library system consisting of family childrenand mobile libraries. Huang’s library thought and practice were mutually reinforcing embodying theirpopular micro-level pragmatic and cross-disciplinary nature. Huang made a distinctive and lastingcontribution to the development of modern Chinese librarianship.
