A Study on the Letters and Manuscripts of Chen Taoyi and Ding Wenjiang in Shanghai Library

Abstract:

Chen Taoyi Xiansheng Shouzha and Ding Zaijun Han Du have been collected in Shanghai Library, the former included 34 public and private letters and telegrams from Chen Taoyi, the governor of Jiangsu Province to Ding Wenjiang who was the associate director of the Shanghai and Woosung Portadministration. The latter included some draft transcripts of letters and telegrams for Ding Wenjiang’s correspondence with all walks of life, which contain 4 volumes 262 letters. This batch of materials cansupplement the missing part of Ding Wenjiangs archives in the Fu Sinian Library of which the instituteof History and Linguistics of Academia Sinica in Taiwan. And these collections are also the material forLiu Houshengs Biography of Ding Wenjiang (first draft) and Hu Shi’s Biography of Ding Wenjiang ofthe missing correspondence in 1926, which the academics have not yet utilized. In addition, this batchof letters and telegrams can supplement Chen Taoyi and Ding Wenjiang’s annals, biographies, andanthologies, which reflect the personnel system of nomination and examination, the specific work of the general administration of Shanghai and Woosung Port, several political insiders, etc in that time.
