Scholars’ Discussions on School Libraries in the Republic ofChina Period and Its Contemporary Enlightenment

Abstract:

During the Period of the Republic of China (1912 to 1949), school libraries emerged anddeveloped with the modernization of education and the prosperity of librarianship. Many scholars in theRepublic of China period noticed and discussed the importance of school libraries and the problems in thepractices. There were many voices at that time questioning the need for libraries in primary and secondaryschools. In response, scholars demonstrated the necessity of school libraries from three aspects: therelationship between education and libraries, the relationship between primary and secondary schools andlibraries, and the relationship between teachers and students and libraries. As for the problems of funding,building and facilities, organization, books, services and reading guidance, the scholars discussed and putforth realistic solutions. Based on their viewpoints, experience, and suggestions, this article concludes thatthe discussions have some enlightening viewpoints, and can provide enlightenments on development ofcontemporary school libraries and its construction.
