Verification of the Author and Value of the Maoyuan Diary Collected in the National Library of China

Abstract:

The manuscript Maoyuan Diary collected by the National Library of China was written inthe second year of Jiaqing and the author was described as “Maoyuan Scholar”. The characters, locationsand events mentioned in the diary were related to Jiading and Suzhou. Referring to the poetry collections,local chronicles and biographical materials, the author of this diary can be verified as Yan Yu, a scholarfrom Jiading who lived in Shantang, Suzhou. Yan Yu was skilled in painting landscapes and had deepfriendship with Qian Daxin, Wang Chang, Yuan Tingtao and Ren Zhaolin. The diary reflects the real lifeof Suzhou during the Qianjia period in Qing dynasty and the daily creative process of the Loudong Schoolof Painting in the Qing Dynasty
