Abstract: The Chinese language textbook Yü-yen Tz?-êrh Chi, which was written by Westerners and published at the middle of 19th Century, was revised three times since 1850s. As the first systematic course book modeling Peking Mandarin, it has profound influence on Sino-Western cultural exchange. Besides these formal publications recorded in bibliographic data, some block-printed editions of Yü-yen Tz?-êrh Chi bound in threads have been found in Shanghai Library. By drawing on its content, relevant documents and historical records, the paper finds out the source edition on which subsequent block-printed editions were based. More information on the publication and using of these reprint copies have been discovered by the survey and analysis of the stamps and handwritten notes in these copies. It is a vivid case study in the language and culture contact between China and West in the late 19th Century.
