Abstract:

Childhood is an important period for developing independent reading ability. Based onthe framework of PIRLS2021, the paper designs and puts forward the independent reading standardsassessment model and methods. Grade 4 pupils in Nanjing and Huzhou were selected as the examinees. The results shows: (1) Independent reading ability is not only the important part of reading literacy, butalso the external reflection of reading literacy. PIRLS2021 reading literacy framework is applicablein Chinese context. (2) Independent reading ability is different from language ability, and regionaldifferences have limited impact on children’s autonomous reading ability. (3) In terms of reading purpose, there is a positive correlation between emotional reading and cognitive reading. The enhancement ofemotional reading ability can promote the level of cognitive reading ability. (4) In terms of reading ability, the positive correlation among four abilities, namely, retrieval, reasoning, integration and evaluation, andthe reading evaluation ability is the most noteworthy aspect.
