Abstract:

School libraries are important spaces for literacy development, active learning and nurturingreading habits of young people, but research on school libraries has remained on the periphery ofpedagogy and librarianship and has not received the amount of attention it deserves. The information ofschool librarianship abroad has limited to a few developed countries in Europe and the United States. This paper analyses the challenges faced by school libraries in Norway and the strategies used to addressthem through a review of the relevant literature, focusing on policy, practice and research related toschool libraries in that country. The study finds that the Norwegian school library community is worthyof emulation by other countries in terms of how they tap into the value of its own career, how they dealwith the conflict between the classroom and the extracurricular, as well as how they build communicationnetworks and promote tripartite cooperation between school libraries, public libraries and librarianshipfaculties in universities.
