Abstract: Du Mu was a famous poet and essayist in the late Tang Dynasty, and his newly unearthed epitaph in recent years is related to his family lineage, personal history and the content of poetry and prose. Based on the comparison between the newly published epitaph and the handed down documents, this study carries on the academic research to Du Mu from three aspects: the first is to confirm Du Mu’s life, focusing on his experiences as a historiographer and Huzhou prefectural governor; the second is to confirm Du Mu’s poetry, espcially the communication poems between Du Mu and Li Gan, Wei Chulao, Cui Jun and Lu Wu; the third is to comfirm Du Mu’s prose, focusing on “The Epitaph of Niu Sengru” and other five narraive proses.
