Research on Japanese Library’s Multicultural Services

Abstract: Selecting Current Awareness, an information and communication magazine issued by the National Diet Library of Japan, as research subject, this article analyzes the themes and keywords of research papers it publishes, and reveals the development trend and status quo of multicultural services in Japanese libraries, namely, (1) the current multicultural services in Japanese libraries mainly focus on English-speaking countries, with less coverage of Asian countries, including China; (2) these services are mainly carried out by public libraries and university libraries; (3) the keywords of multicultural services include “children”, “youth”, “community”, “digitization” and “digital archives”, which reflect the essential characteristics of current library services. In the meantime, this article selects two latest practices for case study, and summarizes the opportunities and challenges of multicultural services in Japanese libraries
