Zheng Lili: A Pioneer of Education for Children’s Librarianship in New China

Abstract: Based on four oral historical interviews and related literature, this paper introduces and summarizes the academic resume of Professor Zheng Lili, who is an outstanding library scholar in China, from three aspects: the decision of studying children’s librarianship, the creation of a special course for children’s library, and the adherence to the research of children’s librarianship. Firstly, this paper analyzes the reasons why Professor Zheng Lili took children’s librarianship as her lifelong career. Secondly, her initiatives and contributions to children’s librarianship education is summarized: (1) she was the first person to start a special course for children’s library in China’s university; (2) she was one of the first scholars to put forward the concept of education for children’s librarianship; and (3) she was the main author of the textbooks for educating children’s librarians. In the end, this paper summarizes the academic achievements of Professor Zheng Lili. In a word, Professor Zheng Lili’s study experience and academic activities are combed and discussed in this paper. From a very micro perspective, the author hopes that the exploration and contributions made by early library scholars in the realm of children’s library can enrich the research content of children’s Librarianship in China, and provide reference for tracing back to the tradition of children’s librarianship education.
