Abstract: Mao Shi Zhuan Jian by Japan’s Wushan Publishing Centre is a special kind of publication from
the Kamakura to the Muromachi period in Japan(1185-1673). It is a combination of the Song Dynasty’s
block-printed edition and Japanese codex. The textual content and publication style of Wushan edition’s
Mao Shi Zhuan Jian had an impact on the Qingchang Mao Shi Zheng Jian in the Japanese Edo period(1603-
1867). Wushan edition’s Mao Shi Zhuan Jian is valued for preserving the appearance of the Song Dynasty’s
block-printed edition and Japanese codex. Besides, Japanese scholars also left annotation in the main text,
which enriched the textual information of Mao Shi. In short, Wushan edition’s Mao Shi Zhuan Jian is a
product of the combination of Chinese classics and Japanese studies. It is one of the typical examples of
the variants of the Chinese classics abroad. Therefore, Wushan Publishing Centre’s Mao Shi Zhuan Jian
has a unique status and meaning.
