Abstract: This study takes Shanghai university students as an example to investigate the current status of college students reading the Chinese classics in the new era, with a focus on the reading motivation. This study indicates: gender and age are the influencing factors of reading motivation; reading motivation is a multi-dimensional construct, including two categories and six dimensions (namely, extrinsic motivation such as social interaction, self-development and identification with others, and intrinsic motivation such as self-interests, digital media, and emotional needs); Social interaction is the most important dimension of reading motivation; and gender, age, academic major and grade have an impact on different dimensions of reading motivation. Accordingly, strategies are proposed to promote classics reading among the college students: Firstly, we should focus on the promotion of reading among younger readers and cultivating their reading habits; secondly, we can stimulate reading motivation through extrinsic driving forces; and thirdly, it’s important to utilize social media to develop socialized
reading.
