Abstract: During the period of the Republic of China, Western learning methodology was introduced, and Philology in the modern sense came into being. The general works of philology during this period played an important role in the construction of the discipline system, and also practically guided today’s discipline development. Upon sorting out the evolution of the academic context of documentary science in the Republic of China period, the paper analyses the existing researches in the hope of promoting the research of general theoretical works of philology science of the Republic of China period. In view of problems such as uneven distribution of research results, narrow research fields and lack of variety in research methods, we fully exploit and utilize the existing historical materials, expand the research content, and adopt the theories and methods of metrological history, psychological history, E-Delphi method, internal and external history for reference as the starting point of future research
