Research on the Collection Development Policy of University of Chicago Library

Abstract: This paper mainly analyses the content of the library collection development policy of the University of Chicago.The policy consists of two major aspects: general introduction and rules.The general introduction includes collection level, source of supply, type of literature, selection of electronic resources, gift, recommendation and protection policies, and retention of back issue.The rules include five parts: regional research, humanities, social sciences, science and medicine, and other collections.It is characterized by clear classification of contents, emphasis on readers’opinions and needs, clear division of responsibilities, and importance attached to special collections. University libraries in China can learn from the experience and improve their own collection policies.
