Xin’an Nü Xing Lu, the Only Existing Copy Collected in The Library of Congress

Abstract: Xin’an Nü Xing Lu has twenty volumes. It is the only version collected in the Library of
Congress. Cheng Yun peng was a famous literary man during the Qing dynasty. He lived in She, a county in
Anhui Province, and his birthplace was Jiangxia. He cared about current affairs and liked travelling. He spent
30 years collecting materials. This book included more than one hundred and twenty articles. It recorded
hundreds of women’s deeds of Huizhou during the Ming and Qing dynasties. The version published in the
fifteen years of the Qianlong reign was the only edition of the book. Influenced by the literary inquisition,
it had some modifications after being carved. So that some articles were lost. As a record of women from
Xin’an and their lives, this book saved rich historical documents of folk customs and a large number of
women’s social lives in Huizhou. It is an important book about the Huizhou women’s issues.
