A Methodological Research of Students’ Information Literacy Assessment

Abstract: Researchers have used different research approaches and assessment instrument to uncover
students’ level of information literacy, which is defined as abstract competence. This research analyzes the
current situation of students’ information literacy evaluation research. It collected relevant papers from
comprehensive databases and one LIS database, filtrated three times, and studied the resulting 302 full
texts. An analysis framework had been constructed on the first 77 articles, using content analysis method,
which includes measure object, measure approach, source and basis of tools, and measure content. Based
on the analysis framework, it studied 64 articles, which were randomly chosen from the 302 full texts.
In conclusion, university students are the majority as measured objects; questionnaire the most widely
used measure approach; assessment approach in the field of education are drawn upon; there are several
widely used assessments developed by some institutions, and the standard of ACRL is the important basis;
the content of assessment tools is also dependent on students’ background and majors. The value of this
research is to offer reference for the information literacy teachers.
