Abstract: t This paper researches on the factors affecting adults’ reading habits mainly through
questionnaires. Through the analysis of questionnaire data, it presents that primary school reading hobbies
and adults reading habits lead to “advantage groups” with demographic significance—female over male,
group born between 1968 and 1977 over that born between 1978-1988, people living in counties, towns
and small and medium-sized cities over those in metropolis are more likely to nurture reading habit in
primary schools and into adulthood. Three hypotheses have been confirmed through investigation:
(1) Adults’ reading habits are largely formed by reading hobbies back in primary school: more than
90% of adults with reading habits also were reading enthusiasts in primary school; (2) Adults’ reading
environment is positively correlated with their reading habits. Therefore, reading environment is an
important helper to the formation of reading habits in adulthood; (3) Consistent reading contributes to the
development of the readers, people with reading habits are more likely to have better academic and career
development.
