A Comparative Study of Book Donation Policies Between Chinese and American University Libraries: Taking Ivy League and C9 League as Examples

Abstract: Through the investigation of book donation policies of university libraries in the Ivy League and C9 League, this article makes a comparative analysis from the following five aspects of book donation: publicity, content, method, requirements, and rights & interests. The findings show some existing deficiencies in the book donation policies in Chinese university libraries. Thus, the study suggests improvement and development of book donation policies of university libraries in China be made including improving the website construction and strengthening publicity, attaching importance to donation work and standardizing book donation policies, improving collection development policies to reveal collecting needs, standardizing donation process and attaching importance to audit and evaluation, and clarifying rights and responsibilities and enriching donation feedback
