A Pilot of Reading Services to Minors: Ten-year Practices of Mobile Book Caravan of Suzhou Library

Abstract: The project of Suzhou Mobile Book Caravan for the minors undertaken by Suzhou Library was designed to provide active reading services specially for teenagers and children. It has successfully extended the range of universally equal service and popularized minors’ reading service. For over a decade, the project has made a commendable attempt at realizing Chinese characteristic public library service system covering rural and urban areas. The authors interviewed relevant persons participating in this project, and consequently acquired a deep understanding of the service’s developing course, as well as how it rapidly grew and optimized itself in the process. They identify the two stages of its development with the focus shifting from primary and secondary school students to kindergarten kids. They also list the difficulties Suzhou Library encountered and solutions of it came up with at various periods.
