The Way to Study in the U.S.A. by the Graduates from Imperial Tientsin University in the Late Qing Dynasty: Illustrated by the Examples of Communications between Sheng Hsuanhuai and John Fryer from the Sheng Husan-huai Archives of Shanghai Library

Abstract: In the background of sending students to study in other countries by the Qing Government,Sheng Hsuan-huai asked Dr. John Fryer, the professor of University of California, to take the graduates from Imperial Tientsin University to U.S.A. in 1901. After having discussion many times, Sheng Hsuanhuai and John Fryer reached an agreement. When the students were in the U.S.A., Dr. John Fryer should take responsibility of major studying, money-use, and professional training etc. Otherwise, the success of studying in the U.S.A. is also a microcosm of overseas study in the late Qing Dynasty
