Abstract:

This paper introduces the research findings of the National Social Science Funds Project “The Study of International Metropolitan Library Evaluation Index System”, with the case study of Shanghai Library. The comparative and item-by-item analysis on the indexes of facilities and resources,service performance, service outcome, and impacts and contributions in Shanghai Library are made. Five international metropolitan libraries such as those in Shanghai, Hong Kong, Singapore, New York and Tokyo are also selected to study. The advantages and characteristics of each library are analyzed, whereas the current status and development trend are summarized. By way of index comparison, the present situation of Shanghai and its gap with other international cities are drawn, and a useful exploration of the construction practice of international metropolitan libraries for Shanghai is provided.
