A Study on Western Publications on Chinese Studies in Sun Yat-sen University Libraries

Abstract:

Western publications on Chinese Studies in Sun Yat-sen University came from Lingnan University library which had built the special collection in 1917 and had 2, 049 items and 311 kinds of western journals on China in the April of 1938. In these western publications, 123 volumes and 12 journals were listed in Check List of Important Western Books on China prepared by Harvard-Yenching Institute at Harvard University. Sun Yat-sen University Libraries have 886 kinds of the western publications, and the features of the collections are that: (1) 18 volumes are published before 1840 and very important for bibiology and academic research; (2) 103 volumes are on agriculture, living things, geology and medicine of China, and represent the highest level of these researches at the time; (3) 62 volumes are research works on South China, many of which are rare editions within the country even in 1930s.
