eBook: Areas of Engagement and Its Future

Abstract: The paper reviews some key events in the eBook realm from the aspects of e-reading market, eBook lending, business models and eBook standards between 2011 and 2012. In the past two years, e-reading is still on the rise, whereas eBook publishers put checkout limits on libraries’ eBook lending, and eBook standards are being developed constantly. Predictions for eBooks development in the future are made here: libraries will strive for more space under the existing business models; patron-driven acquisition is to become the norm; the eBook standards will be constantly updated with the development of eBook industry; legal framework for protecting eBook copyrights and library rights will be urgently needed.
