Library Going Global in the Republic of China Era: A Study on the International Communication of the Bibliothèque Sino-Internationale

Abstract

Abstract: Established in 1933 during the Republic of China era the Bibliothèque Sino-Internationale wasfounded to promote a balance between Chinese and Western cultures. It played an important role inspreading Chinese culture to the world. The library adopted a director responsibility system elected by thecouncil with a Geneva headquarters and a Shanghai branch. The collections of the two locations reflecteddifferent emphases in Chinese and Western materials and the staff consisted of both Chinese andforeigners. The Bibliothèque Sino-Internationale actively fulfilled its mission and promoted Chineseculture to the world through concrete actions such as engaging in international publishing hostinginternational exhibition and carrying out international academic exchanges. It became a key hub forcultural exchange between the East and the West. At present domestic libraries can learn from theexperience and practices of the Bibliothèque Sino-Internationale in terms of international innovativedevelopment such as establishing overseas institutions enhancing positive internal and externalinteractions strengthening planning and participating in international activities expanding business areasacross borders and enhancing service functions.
