The Pioneer and Leader of Professional Education in Children’s Library Science: Carnegie Library Training School for Children’s Librarians

Abstract: The Carnegie Library Training School for Children’s Librarians in Pittsburgh was established in 1901, which was the first educational institution specializing in training children’s librarians. The article analyzes the development history, training methods, curricula, faculty and educational philosophy of the training school through historical combing. The Training School was based on the leading children’s services of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, when the children’s services were burgeoning in the public libraries of the United States. The Training School emphasized the importance of practice, the natural qualities of children’s librarians, and actively interdisciplinary cooperation. It trained a large number of talents and greatly contributed to the children’s librarianship.
