The Library Career and Works of Mr. John Chih-Ber KweiBefore the 1940s

Abstract: Mr. John Chih-Ber Kwei was a world-famous librarian in the 20th century. His library thoughts
formed and matured before the 1940s. Mr. Kwei published more than 40 articles related to librarianship in
English in the 1920s and 1930s. Most of them are not known by Chinese library science researchers. Based
on these literatures and those published in Chinese before the 1940s, this article introduces the library
career and works of Mr. Kwei in his early years during the library science education in Boone Library
School period (1920—1922), library work and library thoughts formation period (1922—1926), overseas
library science education and research period (1926—1931), work for Chinese libraries and library thoughts
maturing period (1931—1940). It reveals the great contribution Mr. Kwei made for the Chinese librarianship,
Chinese library science, and Chinese book collections in North America. This article provides historical
materials for further research about Mr. Kwei’s library thoughts.
