Abstract: g (Hangzhou Library) Abstract The emphasis and difficulty of ancient Chinese book cataloguing lie in the bibliographical description for manuscripts and hand-writing copies. Regarded as new historical materials with feature of literature, manuscripts, especially those of unpublished books, are of great value for development and utilization, as they have rarely been circulated and might be the only existing copies. Unlike block printing books that can be contrasted with catalogues or printed matter of other editions, manuscripts as well as handwriting copies vary largely in both type form and handwriting style. Hence, without careful proofreading and discrimination, it’s extremely easy to make mistakes in writing the bibliographical description and even misguide readers. The author illustrates cases of mistakes in bibliography for rare ancient Chinese books in Hangzhou Public Library collection to explore reasons for the mistakes and ways of discrimination. In addition, the author summarises the limitation of present situation of bibliographical description for manuscripts and hand-writing copies and puts forward the countermeasure.
