Abstract: Zhang Zhidong's Shu Mu Da Wen is a bibliography of recommendations for teaching people “what books are worth reading” and “which edition is better”. But “what books” and “which edition of books” can be determined, are based on the results of Qing literature review. Zhang revealed many achievements of philology in the Qing Dynasty, which include recovering lost texts, identification, collation and other bibliographic connotations. He also formed a unique understanding of class of books, series of books, “Zhaji pamphlets” and other types of literature. Therefore, Shu Mu Da Wen is an important material in the history of the development of classical Chinese literature, and has a high status in the academic history of literature.
