Abstract: Chinese ancient books contain a wealth of resources related to book seals ,and the inscriptions on them exhibit a unique stylistic style in terms of vocabulary, grammar and rhetoric, and thus possess significant linguistic value. The inscriptions on the seals encompass the subject of appraisal and collection, the act of appraisal and collection, the object of the document, additional components, the name of the seal, as well as poems, essays and sentences. The organizational forms of the inscriptions include “seal subject”, “seal subject + document object”, “seal subject + appraisal and collection act + document object”, etc. The linguistic units of the inscriptions include words, phrases, simple sentences, complex sentences, and segments. The structural sentence patterns of the inscriptions include subject-predicate sentences and non-subject-predicate sentences, while the functional sentence patterns primarily consist of declarative and imperative sentences. The rhetorical devices of the inscriptions include antithesis, metonymy, word imitation, poeticization, simplification, etc. By analyzing the composition and stylistic features of the inscriptions, this research reveals the morphology, syntax, and rhetoric of the inscriptions, then provides the inspiration and guidance for the development of seal philology and seal linguistics.
