Abstract: The design of spaces to promote reading for special populations is an important area of concern for public library space reconstruction and reading promotion. This article summarizes the U.S. public library space design standards, norms and guidelines for reading by special populations through content analysis, and uses Internet research and case analysis to study “AIA / ALA Library Building Design Award”, “COTE Top Ten Projects” and “ALA / IIDA Library Interior Design Award” recipient libraries’ space design for special populations. It proposes to strengthen the space design of public libraries in China to promote reading by special groups from three levels: clear objectives and principles, enhancement of dedicated / universal design, and policy guarantee
