Good at Reading is Good at Collecting for Scholars: The Examples of Reading Culture Concepts for Jiangnan’s “Scholar Collectors” in the Ming and Qing Dynasties

Abstract: “Good at Reading is Good at Collecting for Scholars” is one of book culture concepts for Qian Zeng, Changshu collectors, in early Qing Dynasty. By summarizing the typical examples of book collectors, like Hu Yinglin, Qi Chengye, Qian Qianyi, Huang Zongxi, Yuan Mei, Huang Pilie, and Zhang Jinwu during the Ming and Qing Dynasties who were devoted themselves to gathering, reading and writing, this article analyzed the academic path of “book collection for readers”, and further explored the similarities and differences in cultural concepts and behaviors between “book collection for readers” and “book collection for collectors”, in order to enrich humanistic connotation of the cultural history of Chinese books , and strived to spread the “reading seeds” of the era of reading for all , together with the readers and collectors to pursue the vision of building a scholarly society.
