Abstract: Academic integrity is an important issue of general concern to Chinese academia and society, and the study of the influencing factors of breach of academic integrity is a prerequisite to academic misconduct governance. Based on the traditional perspectives of individual characteristics and institutional environment, this study proposes to explore the influencing factors from an organizational perspective. Taking 8583 duplicate journal papers in economics and management as the research sample, we found that “unit”, which represents the nature of the organization, has significant influence on the number of republications. In addition, whether the first publishing journal is a core journal and the time of publication also have a great impact on the number of republications, whereas the proxy variable of ethical level, “the number of authors”, does not influence much the number of republications. The results suggest that the difference of individual ethical level is not enough to effectively explain academic misconduct, and the organization has a strong discipline effect on academic misconduct. This result confirms the effectiveness of the “Institutional Unit System Theory” in explaining academic organizations and academic integrity in China.
