Abstract: COUNTER is an international standard to standardize the data processing, auditing and submission of statistical reports on the use of online electronic resources. It is the core element of the usage statistics and evaluation of library electronic resources. Currently, COUNTER has released the latest version of R5, and it is of great significance to understand the new features of R5 and its difference from the previous version in the electronic resource statistics of the library. This article introduces the report of COUNTER R5, the indicator type of the report, the data type, the access type, and other attributes of the improved report. The paper also introduces the influence of R5 on SUSHI harvest and on library, the concept of “continuous maintenance”, and the important timing of R5 implementation. At the same time, the development and differences of R5 compared with R4 were compared and analyzed. The primary features of COUNTER R5 are its consistency, clarity and simplicity especially in contrast with COUNTER R4. R5 also includes a continuous maintenance process that allows code to be updated without introducing a new version. In sum, R5 relieves the time and personnel costs of version upgrades for vendors and libraries.
