Abstract:

Dr. Hu Shih owned a handwritten copy of The Story of the Stone version 1754. On the right side of the
first page of the book, there are six red seals beside or above the black handwritten Chinese characters, four of which
are private collection seals. Having investigated the owners and analyzed the stamping sequence of these seals, the
authors answered why Dr. Hu Shih stamped his private collection seal on the very top of the page, why the earliest
private collection seal on the bottom of the first row was torn, and why Dr. Hu Shih stamped other two seals above the
characters which violated the sealing rules. It is also confirmed that Dr. Hu Shih’s original description about the first
page of The Story of the Stone version 1754 is accurate.
