Abstract:

The author’s preface to A Mélange of Essays by Pi Rixiu (Pizi wensou) reflects the features of two paradigms of the compilation of ancient anthologies—the record of writers’ genealogy and the brief preface written for each selection explicating its meaning. Originating from Western Han dynasty classics such as Sima Qian’s “Author’s Preface to the Historical Records,” these two paradigms had shown several variations in the compilation of anthologies after the Tang dynasty. This examination enhances our understanding of the influences of the compiling norms of Confucian canon, historical records and miscellaneous writings on the compilation of literary anthologies in later times. It also helps us understand the new paradigmatic variations in the compilation of literary anthologies after the Tang dynasty.
