Abstract:

Zhang Zeduan had no intention to let the word Qingming mean the Qingming Festival for he
did not paint the customs of this festival. The painting is not the scene of the gateway of the city Bianjing but
the scene of the part of the Shanghe River on the east of the Qingming block. The hypothesis that Qingming
means peace and harmony is not the painter’s idea but the viewers’ impressions. So the topic of the Painting of
Qingming Shanghe is the scene of the part of the Shanghe river on the east of the Qingming block. Qingming
means the Qingming block. Using place names to name this paint is a strong claim that this paint is the realistic
representation of the scenes in reality.
